STUDENT CLUBS

Enrichment clubs have played an integral part at Truebright this school year.  Most staff members have participated by organizing a club that centered on a specific activity.  Students have had a variety of clubs from which to choose (though they did not always get their first or second choice, we rotated based on grade level) such as art, out door activities, Science Olympiads, and dance just to name a few. A more comprehensive list is below.

One of the aspects that helped make the enrichment clubs successful were the outside volunteers.  A group of young men from Temple assisted and/or led various clubs.  This allowed the students to observe college students as mentors.  Another very important club volunteer is one of the parents.  She volunteers her time twice a week to lead a home economics club.

Dance Club-Students will learn and put together drills and dance steps.  Hopefully they will eventually perform at school and public functions.

Science Club-The purpose of the science club is to provide students with the opportunity to use their creativity and teamwork skills to design and build a variety of devices that will compete against each other.  Cool prizes will be awarded.

Examples of projects:

·         Design and build a boat out of tin foil and straws that would hold the most pennies before sinking

·         Design and build a container for an egg that, when dropped from a window, would not break

·         Design and build a parachute that would safely guide an egg to a target from a window

Film History and Criticism-This club will be focused on the ever-changing film industry.  We will learn about the origins of film and the film industry and watch its evolution throughout the years.  We will be watching one movie from each major period in film history and criticizing each movie.  Students will ONLY watch the classics.

Art Club-This club will explore the art of mosaics.  Students will create a mosaic using tiles, mirrors, and grout in exciting colors about TSACS.  Students will work closely as a group, brainstorm, and come up with a movable mural to be displayed in the building.

Activity Club-Students will participate in various sports. Some of these sports will be football, basketball, handball, double dutch, soccer, and physical fitness.  Some sports will include tournament style playing where students can win a trophy or certificate.

Song Club and Paper making (this club will be split each week)

In the song part of the club, students will explore a variety of music and the impact music has had on society.  Each class students will analyze a song for historical and social importance.  In the paper making part of the club, students will create various types of paper such as creating recycled paper and marbleized paper.

Eastern Studies- This club will explore culture, language, and tradition from the other side of the world (such as China, India, Japan, Tibet, Thailand, and more.)  Some of the topics to be pursued will be: Physical exercises like yoga, chi kung, and meditation.  Students will also learn Chinese character writing and explore customs such as ceremonies and celebrations.  Students will also explore foods from some of these places.

Chess Club-In this club students will learn how to play chess.  Chess is a very strategic, thought-orientated game that will teach you a variety of critical thinking skills.  If you think playing chess isn’t “cool” you are wrong- some of the most famous rappers play chess: “lots of rappers play chess. Its like Hip-Hops intellectual dirty secret- Wu-Tang Clan.-RZA, and GZA especially. They brought it back but using the board as a metaphor for surviving on the streets.”

Origami Club-Learn the ancient art of origami, the ancient Japanese art of paper folding.  In this club you will learn to use your patience to make beautiful small objects (such as birds) out of paper.  This is an opportunity to let your creativity grow.

Astronomy Club-Ever wonder about all the stars in the sky?  Or thought about life on other planets or far away galaxies?  This club will explore the sky.  Students will learn about the stars, planets, and constellations.  Hopefully there will even be a trip to the planetarium.

Drama Club-In this club students will learn about improvisation and drama.  Students will be engaged in a variety of “dramatic” games and various acting techniques.

Reverse Club- Truebright students are learning this skillful and strategic board game.  Learn how to "out smart" your opponents

Computer Club-This club will take students beyond what they learn in computer class.  Students will learn a variety of programs that will help them make art, music, and film.

Home Economics- students will be taught about sewing, quilt making, and cooking in this club.  This club is led by a parent volunteer.

Travel Club- This club is hand-picked by staff members based on student behavior and academics.  The purpose of this club is to travel around the city visiting various sites. These sites include the Art Museum, the Liberty Bell, Waterworks, Bartram’s Garden, Philadelphia Z00, Fabric Museum, and other historic and important tourist destinations.

Home Economics- students will be taught about sewing, quilt making, and cooking in this club.  This club is led by a parent volunteer.

Cooking Club- students learned to make simple 20 minute meals by following a recipe

Math counts- students met twice a week to enhance their math skills and participate in the Math Counts competition.

Games of logic Club- Truebright students are putting their brain to the test in this fun and challenging club.  They are playing games such as Checkers, Battleship, and Scrabble.

Current Events- Truebright students are discussing events that are happening in the world today. This can be local and national events as well.

Community Forum is a place to discuss the issues that the Truebright students have as teenagers.  This has been a space for open dialogue and to come together and share.

African American Music- Students learned the various African American music types of the past and present.  They learned how all the music is related to each other.

Please read this to your students.

Today you will be “selecting” your clubs.  Clubs will be meeting every Tuesday and Thursday during the 7th period EC.  Clubs are mandatory (as attendance will be taken) but also a privilege.  This means that if you are not following the Code of Conduct, you will lose the ability to attend your club and will be sent to a silent detention instead.

Also know- that when we say “choose” your club- this does not mean you will necessarily be in your club of choice.  Students will rank their top 3 choices.  We will try to honor one of these choices, but each club is limited in the number of students who can participate in it.  Club rotation lasts for 6 weeks- after which time you will choose again.  This first round we will start with 9th graders choosing first.  The next time 8th graders will choose first, and then the 7th graders the round after.  This way everyone will have a chance at some point in the year to be in his or her favorite club.  Also, club selections are subject to change with each round (this will be up to the individual teacher teaching the club).  The purpose of clubs is to provide you with opportunities you do not get during the regular school day. These clubs are also designed to enhance your educational experience as a student (and hopefully help you learn something new).  Clubs are NOT free time.  Clubs will be very well structured and organized.  This is not time to sleep, hang out with friends, or act out.

If you have any questions- Please let me know.

Thanks

Ms. Cathie
